Bio

Dr. Carroll is a Laryngeal surgeon and the Director of the Voice Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  He is a board certified Otolaryngologist and an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Carroll treats all laryngeal disorders related to voice, swallowing and breathing.  He is recognized nationally and internationally for his research and advancements in the understanding and treatment of chronic cough and the overlapping presenting symptoms of  laryngopharyngeal reflux and glottic insufficiency from subtle vocal fold changes.

Dr. Carroll received his medical degree from Wright State University School of Medicine and completed a residency in otolaryngology at the University of Colorado Denver and Health Sciences Center. He completed a fellowship in laryngology and care of the professional voice at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Voice Center in 2008.  Prior to joining Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Carroll created and Directed the Center for Voice and Swallowing at Tufts Medical Center in Boston where he implemented a multidisciplinary voice care model, equally incorporating Speech language Pathologists and Laryngologists into every new patient visit.  This patient-centered model was the first of its kind in Boston and continues its success at The Brigham and Women’s Voice Program to help patients avoid multiple trips to the city and obtaining a sound treatment plan on the first visit.

Dr. Carroll’s interests include medical and surgical care of the professional voice (singing and speaking), early glottic cancer with an emphasis on voice preservation using KTP/photoangiolytic laser therapy, Laryngopharyngeal reflux and related disorders such as chronic cough, vocal cord paralysis/paresis and office based laryngeal surgery, including vocal fold augmentation, other therapeutic injections for vocal fold scar and spasmodic dysphonia, laryngeal biopsies and KTP/photoangiolytic laser therapy. He is a lifetime singer with an undergraduate music degree from Oberlin College.  He formerly performed with the St. Thomas Choir of Men and Boys in New York City, the Oberlin Obertones, the Oberlin College Choir and most recently with the Oriana Consort, in Cambridge, MA.
