About Alexander Putnam Cole, MD

Dr. Cole is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School,  Associate Surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Junior Core Faculty at the Center for Surgery and Public Health. He received his BA at Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts and his MD at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.  In addition to his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he completed fellowships in urologic oncology (at BWH/DFCI) and image guided therapeutics/focal therapy (University College London)

Dr. Cole is a clinician scientist whose work has been honored in numerous settings. His study on cost variations in radical prostatectomy was voted “Best Abstract” at American Urological Association annual meeting in 2016 and was presented at the plenary session of that conference. He was twice awarded the Max Willscher Resident Research Award from the New England Section of the American Urological Association (3rd place in 2016, 1st place in 2018) and received the Joseph E. Murray and Simon J. Simonian Award from the BWH Department of Surgery in 2018. In 2020, he was chosen by the New England Section of the AUA to represent our region in the Young Investigators Showcase (one of 10 investigators chosen nationally) and in 2022, he was awarded the Bruce A. Beal and Robert L. Beal Surgical Fellowship from the BWH Department of Surgery.

Dr Cole’s clinical practice consists of open and robotic urologic oncology as well as Focal therapy including High Intensity Focused Ultrasound ablation (HIFU), Cryotherapy and Irreversible Electroporation. In 2021, he performed the first robot-assisted High Intensity focused Ultrasound Ablation in New England. He sees patients at Dana Farber Cancer Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital and operate at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.
